Building where others enjoy the view
With its peak standing at over 3,000 metres above sea level, the Titlis is one of Switzerland’s most internationally renowned destinations for excursions. In order to secure and further develop the tourist infrastructure at the summit in the long term, the TITLIS project is being launched under the management of Titlis Bergbahnen. The renowned architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron has been commissioned to design the structures to be built on the summit in the future in a master plan. A particular emphasis is being placed on utilising sustainable construction methods that protect the sensitive Alpine region in the best possible way.
Marti Zentralschweiz has been responsible for the realisation of structural engineering and civil engineering works since 2023. Some 30 employees are currently working on the Titlis.
Tightly timed construction phases
The construction programme is geared towards the short summer months, during which concrete work is predominantly carried out due to the weather conditions. The concrete plant at the summit is currently running at full speed. A new snow groomer hall in exposed concrete is being built at the Titlis Tower. At the same time, the foundations for the steel structure for the future south-west bypass of the mountain station are being laid at the mountain station.
The existing tower is being dismantled and reinforced, which is expected to be completed by August. The steel construction company will then assume responsibility for developing the restaurant areas. From October onwards, third-party companies will commence with the interior work to be carried out over the winter months, including the fitting of kitchens, floor coverings and interior equipment.
Project Scope
The project consists of three main parts that together form a forward-looking overall solution:
Mountain station
In future, the new summit station will serve as a central point of arrival and reference for visitors. The existing cable car technology will be retained and complemented by modern architectural elements. The food services, panoramic path, retail levels and infrastructure for guest operations will be completely renovated.
Titlis Tower
The directional beam tower currently in place is around 250 metres from the station. The robust steel structure will be expanded by two new building elements, which will feature the same industrial design. The tower symbolises the centre of Switzerland in the form of a cross.
Peak station (Line II)
A second single-track aerial cableway will be built from the Stand intermediate station to the summit to support the logistics of the construction project and for subsequent evacuation purposes. Once the work is complete, it will be used as a permanent logistics pathway and an emergency connection.
“Despite the adverse conditions, the team spirit on the mountain is outstanding. We’re like a family and at over 3,000 metres you just grow together.”
Sustainability and quality
The project consistently takes into account ecological, safety-relevant and architectural requirements. The construction work will be carried out in close consultation with environmental experts. Among other things, machines that use biodegradable hydraulic oil will be utilised. In addition, the excavated rock will be reused as concrete aggregate wherever possible.
