VBZ Garage Hardau / ERZ Stadtreinigung West
Zürich
From housing to schools, from museums to infrastructure: exposed concrete is also part of Marti’s DNA. Discover with #ExposedConcrete a selection of our projects where technical precision meets architectural ambition.
Like a freshly landed spacecraft, the new depot building settles into the Hardau district. The distinctive salt silo, the futuristic exposed concrete facade and the downward-tapering concrete columns are anything but discreet. The shutter boards, arranged vertically, horizontally and diagonally, create a characteristic herringbone pattern. The building serves two urban purposes: the ground floor accommodates 32 articulated trolleybuses, while the basement serves as a depot for 24 cleaning vehicles. 6,900 cubic metres of recycled concrete were used for the facade. The sawtooth roof with vertical windows floods the bus garage with natural light. Inside, wood on the walls of the lounge areas creates a surprisingly warm atmosphere.
