Vaðlaheiðargöng Project
Akureyri, Iceland
The Vaðlaheiðargöng project is a 7.2 km two-lane road tunnel in Iceland that has been in service since 2018. The ring road leading through it connects Akureyri and Húsavík and reduces the former distance by about 16 km. Fluctuating geological conditions and various hot and cold water ingresses presented the tunneling crew with considerable challenges during the construction period.
